App Annie's “State of Mobile 2022”

App Annie recently released its annual “State of Mobile 2022” report, some key findings


  1. Google Play Store dominates the downloads market and is expected to account for more than 100 billion app downloads alone in 2021

  2. India was the #1 country year-to-date, contributing 20% of global downloads across iOS and Google Play combined. This was followed by the US (9%) and Brazil (8%).

  3. The app economy continues to grow with global spends across the app stores, and is expected to increase 25% to reach $135 billion in 2021 from $112 billion in 2020.

  4. iOS spending continues to dominate, 65% of the app economy is by the Apple users.

  5. Gamers are the highest spenders, contributing around 60% of iOS revenue and nearly 80% of Google Play revenues.

  6. Outside of gaming, more than one-third of non-gaming spend comes from entertainment and social apps. Revenue from entertainment apps is expected to rise to $12 billion in 2022, double of the 2020 revenue

  7. App Annie also said that the mobile users will download nearly 140 billion new apps by the end of this year that is 10 billion more than in 2020, and 20 billion more than in 2019, up 8% YoY.


Gaming


Gaming accounted for around $90 billion in total revenue. Casual games are the top games as per the report.


Female friendly games feature in the 10 games for the year, these games combine puzzles with personal styling. The female friendly games recently surpassed the major milestone of seeing over 100 million downloads across the world in just 11 months.

Supersonic's Bridge Race : a game where you try to get from one side of the pool to the other. To do so, you'll need to collect a bunch of blocks that are scattered on the ground and use them to create a walkway.


Hair Challenge : Pick up weaves of any hair colour as you walk the runway. Watch out for the scissors, blades, and all other sharp obstacles to keep your gorgeous hair from getting cut!


Project Makeover : The gameplay involves choosing clothing, furniture, and other style elements with funds players earn by playing matching games.


High Heels : How far can you walk in your very tall shoes.


Count Masters : Choose the best gate to pass through, while stickman warriors clash with the opposing crowd.


Other notable titles included League of Legends: Wild Rift, which surpassed $150 million in consumer spending


Entertainment


In 2019 and 2020, some of the world's biggest entertainment brands launched into the subscription TV market.


Among the Breakout Video Streaming Apps By Time Spent places,

  • YouTube is in the top spot globally

  • Disney+ is at #3 and App Annie estimates that time spent in Disney+ on Android phones hit 975 billion hours globally in YTD 2021 (Jan 2021 - Oct 2021)

  • HBO Max is at #5

  • Disney+ Hotstar is at #8.


Social


App Annie expects social apps will earn $9 billion in 2022, an 82% increase from 2020.


Top 3 Social Apps

  1. TikTok leads the spending chart worldwide (and in the US and the UK), projected to surpass 1.5 billion users in the next 12 months.

  2. BIGO Live - lets users make videos or live-stream their activities

  3. Discord : lets users make voice & video calls, messaging and hang around with friends. Has 205 million global monthly active users as of October 2021.

Among the short video apps, Tiktok continues top hold the top slot, India's own short video apps, MX TakaTak (#2), Moj (#6) and Josh (#15) ranked in the top breakout apps by global downloads.
